Sitting here as the paint crew works away (yes indeedy, our peeling wall problem still hasn't gone away, 2.5 years after move-in), I decided to get into the spirit of things and hopefully speed these guys up by playing German-language tunes instead of, I don't know, Grand Funk (though Mel Schacher certainly does rock his canary yellow satin jumpsuit and platform heels in the linked video). Besides the requisite Falco, I played electro-pranksters Deichkind, plus something a bit more mellow, popster Clueso. Actually, I play his CD So Sehr Dabei whenever guests are over-- it's a great record in any language. Anyways, here's a video from that album for a song called "Gewinner" ("winner" in English). You don't have to understand a word of German to appreciate it, and when this song inevitably gets remade in English, somebody's going to have a hit on their hands.

Thanks for posting the Clueso video. I really enjoyed the song. And, I see multiple lessons layered in this song for a German 101 class! German music has long not been yer Grandpa's oom-pah-pah music. :) Die Frage ist nur ob man hier in GB Clueso und andere tolle Musik aus DE finden kann!
LG,
Bea
Bea: Yeah, German music is more than just Rammstein (who are really becoming a parody of themselves these days), Falco, and for those who remember, Nena. I won't get into German hip-hop which is by and large laughable on its face [hard to see any credibility in someone who says "we're from the mean streets of Augsberg, yo!"]. As fun as Deichkind are (think goofball techno with amazing high energy live shows), Clueso is probably the class act here with the most potential mainstream crossover appeal-- providing he sings in something other than German. His CDs and downloads are available through Amazon UK among other places. I haven't picked up his latest release, but it's just a matter of time. Thanks for listening, and thanks for the comment!
